Biografia
His teachers always used to complain that
Alcides Rodrigues (aka Thë Greg) frequently was distracted in class. The only thing that could hold his attention was music. A few years down the line Music proved to be his great love. In elementary school they used to organise playback shows and he participated almost every time and won on numerous occasions. Eventually he also won
The Rotterdam State Championships as a young’un. His family also adored Music so there was always Music around him while growing up. His father and uncles would organise family dances with his two older brothers as DJ. This granted him access to the newest and hottest records. By this time he had been introduced to the Hip Hop culture through break dancing and their family dances were the perfect opportunity to show his break dancing skills. At the age of 16, he decided to start a group with some friends. They were known as
‘Stage Crew’ which besides him, consisted of schoolmate
Adriano Rodrigues aka Punsho (no relative),
Humberto Machado aka Dhem a’ Rush as the dancers, and with
Martin Bear aka DJ Gusto (years later he would become famous under the alias
G-Boah with his group Postmen). These were his first steps on his Musical journey. 1991 was the year ‘Stage Crew’ reached the finals of the national Dutch Freestyle Dance/Rap Championships. They decided to part ways after a few years and
‘Thë Greg’ found a new partner in Music.
‘Intellectual Science’ is born, his partner is
‘DJ Silence’ (a well known House DJ nowadays). They also enlisted
DJ/producer Social X from DCO (one of pioneering rap groups in Rotterdam) to produce beats. His buddy,
DJ Gusto, by this time also producer, produced a few tracks for
‘Intellectual Science’. This group also disbands after a while, but it was a very productive and learning experience. Meantime Punsho, Dhem a’ Rush and Gusto had become Dutch Freestyle Dance Champions as
‘The Vibe’.
Punsho and Dhem a’ Rush were also a rap group with the same name. When they performed,
‘Thë Greg’ gave them back up on stage and after a few performances, he joined
‘The Vibe’. This was the result of maintaining a positive friendship. Their reputation as great live performers grows rapidly due to their energetic and explosive shows.
‘The Vibe’ is asked as the opening act for
‘Cypress Hill’ first ever performance in Holland. Furthermore they also got noticed in the
Cape Verdian Music scene despite being a rap group. They became regular performers in this scene and were frequently booked when A-list Cape Verdian artists came to perform in
Holland. They also entertained at pageant contests and several other Cape Verdian Events.
‘The Vibe’ is eventually forced to change their name due to the fact that another group was already using the same name for a longer period. Consequently the name was changed into
‘Tha Real Vibe’. Around this time they were approached by a record label but the record deal never materialized, although one thing became evidently clear; They were ready for a professional recording and release. Fortunately they had something else on the table.
Kings Records (a Cape Verdian record label) offered them a deal but they had some demands.
Kings Records wanted them to
rap in their native language with Cape Verdian influences instead of English. After some deliberance they decided to go along with
Kings Records.
‘Mensagem’ which means
‘Message’ was released in 1996. The CD was released International in Luso-African countries. These are countries formally colonialized by
Portugal, for instance
Angola.
‘Mensagem’ is an instant success and is found in several charts in different countries.
In Cape Verde ‘Mensagem’ reaches the number 1 position in the Music charts. International bookings started followed by performances in
Luxembourg, France, England, Switzerland, & Portugal. In 1999
‘Tha Real Vibe’ released their follow up double CD
‘Unidade’ which means ‘Unity’. ‘Unidade’ is received well, but it doesn’t achieve the success of it’s predecessor. Some songs from ‘Unidade’ received airplay on several
Dutch Radio stations like Sun FM and Fun X. 2001 is a quiet year for
‘Tha Real Vibe’ and
‘Thë Greg’ is invited to be back-up
MC for ‘Def Rhymz’. He’s an artist about to become a huge star in Holland. For the next 2 years they performed in almost every venue and/or festival in Holland. Then it’s time to focus on
‘Tha Real Vibe’ again, but things have changed. They don’t see ‘eye to eye’ musically anymore and decided to separate after 12 years.
‘Thë Greg’, the solo artist, is born and it’s also the start of
‘Tha Real Vibe Productions’ as a 2 headed Monster. His Musical kin is Aristides Lima aka ‘Aristos’, who tackles the managerial duties.
Thë Greg’s’ name still rings bells in the Luso-African Market and participates in several project. ‘4 promotional use only’ is his first video and
‘Get around’ his second, which is followed by
‘É so amor’. He works on
‘Já Stá!’ (It’s Done!), his debut solo CD. By now he’s ready to present the complete package for a Music loving audience....[/b][/center]
